Touring Guam Created by PeopleSand Castle where flamboyant dances and amazing magic shows unfoldPacific Fantasy Dinner Show enjoyed alongside a relaxing dinnerNights on Guam are more extravagant than it is during the day.Nights on Guam take place on top of stages lit up by blinding light featuring dance performances by beautiful women in bikinis or hair-raising magic shows. In comparison, there are also evening shows where tourists can enjoy watching traditional Chamorro dances while eating their dinner. Guam is even more enticing to visitors because of its spectacular nightlife. By creating theatrics and performances through unique storytelling, "tours made by people" which draws the interest of the tourists is blossoming on Guam.◆ Sand CastleSand Castle offers the best show on Guam. The show celebrated its 20th anniversary this year since its first show back in 1999. The show unfolds in a private theater and consists of dance performances which can be seen in New York or Chicago and a Vegas-style magic show. A martial arts demonstration and acrobatic performances also take place in between. The major characteristic of the Sand Castle show is that it utilizes the entire theater as a stage. The brilliant lighting effects, extravagant dances, and the penetrating sound effects mesmerize the audience as soon as they sit in their seats. The acrobats perform jaw dropping stunts above the crowd climbing up and down ropes hanging from the ceiling without any safety equipment. The crowd hold their breath as they anxiously watch the show fearing that they might cause one of the acrobats to make a mistake. The highlight of the show is the magic show which features a huge tiger. Even though they know that it is a magic show, the size of the tiger on stage overwhelms the audience. The show provides the audience with an opportunity to see a tiger up close – something they were only able to do from afar at zoos.Since the Sand Castle Show is performed in a private theater located inside a hotel, it is possible for guests to enjoy pre-ordered meals, drinks, and side dishes while watching the show. The waiters and waitresses try to get as close to the guests, so they do not miss their order. They move about busily to ensure that orders are served within 5 minutes. The speed at which service is provided is directly linked to how much revenue is generated considering the waiters have only a 90-minute window of opportunity to make as much money as they can. After the show, the performers wait at the entrance so that guests can take pictures with them on their way out. The performers react kindly even when guests wrap their arms around their shoulders. They are skilled when dealing with unusual situations since people from all over the world come to see the show.◆ Pacific Fantasy Dinner ShowWater parks are another attraction which tourists can enjoy on Guam which has been blessed with beautiful scenery. There are many 5-star hotels and resorts on the island but only a handful are located on the coast. One of them is the Pacific Island Club referred to as PIC. Although it is located away from the downtown area of Tumon, it is a resort popular among Koreans due to its proximity to K-Mart and for serving Korean dishes at every meal. Korean restaurants and convenience stores are located nearby; therefore, it is an ideal accommodation for Korean tourists who get homesick when they travel.Another attraction of PIC is the Pacific Fantasy Dinner Show. Guests can enjoy a buffet dinner while watching shows performed by local Chamorros in an outdoor amphitheater. Traditional Chamorro dances are performed in front of a large cascading waterfall. As the performers become more excited, they began shouting to create an overwhelming atmosphere. Usually, the lead male dancer makes a long, sharp sound which sounds something along the lines of "oo-wee". The cry is loud enough that it can be heard by the entire audience even without a mic. There are various props on stage. A traditional house stands at the center of the stage. Performances begin when the dancers come out of the structure. However, another stage has been set up next to the roof of the house to prevent the audience's attention being focused in one place demonstrating appropriate use of space. Moreover, the water cascading down the fall is directed to flow through the center of the stage. A traditional boat floats on top of the stream from which dancers perform various dances. Despite the fact the audience is inside the resort, the way in which the stage has been set up makes it feel as though one is watching the performance in the ocean or in a river. Throughout the performance, dancers spontaneously jump into the crowd and heighten the festive mood by encouraging the guests to dance along. The highlight of the Pacific Fantasy Show is the fire dance. A muscular male dancer twirls a rod with fire on the ends. He spins it powerfully making it almost seem like the fireballs connect into a circle. The dancer performs various traditional dances and moves while spinning the rod throughout the air. Female dancers who previously performed graceful dances with flowers in their hair presented a strong image when doing the fire dance. Unlike the men, female dancers demonstrated an extraordinary sense of rhythm as they twirled their fire-lit poi to the music.Towards the end of the show, Siheky, PIC Resort's mascot appeared on the stage. Siheky is a mascot based upon an endangered native bird called a kingfisher. A long-lasting memory is imprinted onto the minds of the guests as memories of an impressive performance and a mascot to remember it by overlap in their minds.Barbeque with the Smokiness of Coconut HusksThe savoriness of meats accentuated with smoke from coconut husks…Coconut is plentiful in Guam. For this reason, coconuts are widely used in a variety of dishes while the empty coconut husks are used to make charcoal. Barbeque grilled over these coconut husks is another thing tourist can enjoy on their trip to Guam.Coconut charcoal is relatively easier to light compared to ordinary charcoal. They are hard but they can easy be torn apart along cracks. They can also be broken up into thin fibers making it easier for them to catch on fire. Once lit, they slowly burn like a wick on a candle maintaining a fire which is ideal for cooking. In addition, the scent of coconut seeps into food adding a deep, savory taste to it.Typically, tourists can enjoy barbeques at resorts, hotels, and restaurants around the island. Most often, the good is cooked using coconut charcoal. It is better to enjoy eating barbeque in the evening to avoid the heat of the day and also to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere after sunset.

Taebaek through Mt. Sobaek and Mt. Songni in the West toward Mt. Jiri in the South, leaving an offset called Nakdongjeongmaek.Cheongsong is located at the end summit of Nakdongjeongmaek, and mountains cover about 83 % of Cheongsong, which is surrounded by harsh mountains. In Cheongsong, beautiful and gorgeous pine trees boast their grace in high mountains, befitting the name Cheongsong, meaning "pine tree."CheongSong TrailRun is held on Aug 12 every year. There are four courses: a half mountain course, a 5 ㎞ general course, a 10 ㎞ general course and a 1.5 km walking course. The marathon course runs 21.95㎞ (Cheongsong Hyeonbiam gangsuyokjjang – Mangmijeong - Entrance of Cheongsong-gun residents sports ground – Ongjeomjae, Ongjeom-ri, Pacheon-myeon – Summit of Mt. Mountain marathons are usually strenuous and runners easily run out of breath. The charm of this marathon competition is running a mountain marathon in August, the hottest month of the year. The 1st CheongSong TrailRun held last year was successful, attracting about a thousand participants from around the country. About 70 marathon clubs from around the country participated in the competition and the clubs include Seoul Flyers, consisting of foreigners, a marathon club from Kia Motors and a marathon club from Nonghyup Cheongsong. The key to the success of this competition was finding out about tendencies of marathon maniacs. While most marathon competitions are held in spring and fall, CheongSong TrailRun is held in the middle of summer. This is a switch of ideas. As there are only a few marathon competitions held in summer, this competition looks attractive to marathon maniacs who need to exercise consistently. Particularly, the temperature is lower in Cheongsong than in other parts of the country during summer, which offers a good condition to runners. And the mountain course is mostly tree-shaded, offering an optimal condition to run a race. The 5- and 10-km courses for general marathon maniacs are not mountainous. There are different courses that marathon runners can choose from. The biggest charm of this competition is that participants can feel that they are on vacation, running a race. They begin running, looking at the refreshing waterfall of Hyeonbiam gangsuyokjjang. After they are finished with the race, they can play in the water of Hyeonbiam gangsuyokjjang near the competition place at any time. Last year, plenty of participants brought their families with them to have a summer vacation in Cheongsong.Mountain Bike / Motorcycle RaceThe thrill of racing through a thick pine forest… Divided into downhill and cross-countryAt Cheongsong, renowned for its mountain sports, a national mountain bike and motorcycle race is being held each year in addition to its annual trail run.The national mountain bike race was held recently by the Cheongsong Governor's Office at Mt. Taehaeng MTB course which connects to the trail run course. This race was comprised of both downhill (racing down a slope at high speeds) and cross-country (racing through diverse terrain along the mountain ridge) courses. The race course was set-up to be challenging since riders had to go through all the courses. However, this configuration allowed for riders to enjoy the spectacular view of Cheongsong's natural landscape. Participants got a chance to experience genuine mountain biking experience riding along roads, on trails through thick forests, and narrow mountain ridges. The Cheongsong Motorcycle Cross-country Championship was held during the 32th Juwangsan Azalea Festival this year. The Cheongsong-gun Office devised a plan to host the race to host the race during the festival period in order to offer more attractions to visitors. Cross-country motorcycle racing is a sport which involves racing through rugged terrain and requires quick reflexes and skills. It is an advanced extreme sports; therefore, it is not easy to come by unless you are a person who professionally rides motorcycles. On the contrary, it is this poor accessibility which entices spectators to the sport.
Old houses left by the ancestors.Choose onefrom among Jeongseungdaek, Chambongdaek, Hunjangdaek and other traditional old houses to sleep over. The old houses in Cheongsong are special. The old houses get visitors to imaginethe past, present and future life in Cheongsong. The old houses left by the ancestors in Cheongsong give mysterious feelings to visitors.Cheongsong has plenty of old traditional Korean houses with a long history because it is located in a basin surrounded by mountains and could be protected from flames of war. And the Folk Arts Village consists of houses, restored and reproduced based on old houses in Cheongsong. In the Folk Arts Village, there are houses built, modelled on the old houses in Cheongsong and people getting accommodation at one of the houses can feel like a noble man or a minister in the Joseon period. There are plenty of old houses in Cheongsong that have been remodeled and transformed into new spaces. As such spaces are growing in Cheongsong, the county as a tourist attraction is designed, step by step, to welcome 10 million tourists in the future.Songso Gotaek (Old House of Songso)In the middle of Deokcheon Village, located at a propitious site with a mountain in the back and water in the front, sits Songso Gotaek, an old house with 99 rooms (the largest size in the Joseon period). Songso Gotaek is Important Folklore Material no. 250, designated by the country, and was built by Sim Ho-taek (沈琥澤), a seventh-generation grandson of Sim Cheo-dae (沈處大), who enjoyed the wealth from vast crop-yielding fields during the reign of King Yeongjo of Joseon. The Cheongsong Sim clan is traditionally a prestigious family that produced four queens, four sons-in-law of kings and 13 ministers during the Joseon period. There is an interesting mark that tells of the "inside-outside rule (naewoebeop)" in Songso Gotaek, which prohibited women in public places. There is a wall called heotdam that served as a screening fence to prevent guests at sarangchae (detached building) from seeing women in the family. In contrast, there remains a wall with holes through which women could see visitors from anchae (main building). These walls get visitors to imagine women looking through the holes with curiosity in the Joseon period.Songso Gotaek provides accommodation for tourists. As it is located in an area, designated as a slow city for the first time in Cheongsong-gun, the old house constantly attracts visitors. It is well-known as a filming location of plenty of movies and dramas, such as The Gangster Shaman (Baksu Geondal) and The Divine Weapon (Singijeon). Together with adjacent Chalbanggoing Jongtaek (Chalbanggong Head House) and Changsil Goaetaek (Old House of Changsil), Songso Gotaek looks like a traditional Korean house hotel.Folk Arts VillageNear the entrance of Juwangsan National Park sits the Folk Arts Village along with Daemyung Resort Cheongsong. Cheongsong-gun built the Folk Arts Village with traditional Korean houses modelled on real old houses in the area in May 2014. The village was created based on the idea that most old traditional houses do not offer accommodation. For this reason, each house has a different structure and unique characteristics. The Folk Arts Village is composed of eight houses (26 rooms), namely, Daegamdaek, Yeonggamdaek, Hunjangdaek, Jeongseungdaek, Chambongdaek, Gyosudaek, Saengwondaek and a tavern. Daegamdaek is a reproduction of Chojeondaek, located in Deokcheon Village of Pacheon-myeon, Cheongsong-gun. It is in the form of a house of the nobility and features a square-shaped yard. In Yeonggamdaek, there is a reverse L-shaped main building and the daemunchae building adjoins the shed. There is also a treadmill, which is unique. The original forms of old houses are kept, but the interiors are equipped with cutting-edge facilities. The houses have air conditioning and heating and shower facilities and thus receive good responses particularly from foreigners. The Cheongsong Culture ＆ Tourism Foundation, which manages the Folk Arts Village, will reenact the old market place from the novel Gaekju, which tells a story of peddlers in the late Joseon Dynasty, for three months beginning in July. The market place named "Morakmorak Jangteo" will be set up in the village. When the market place was set up last year for the first time, it was well received. It will be set up for the second time this year. Residents will bring various products in carts to sell them in a flea market. They will sell pottery, woodcrafts and straw crafts they made themselves, and various agriculture products including apples they harvested themselves will sell at half market prices. Near the market place, there will be various events in which residents and tourists can participate. The events include a Cheongsong white porcelain exhibition, peddlers' marching and performance events, as well as experience events like lantern making and hanbok wearing.Cheongsong InnThere are many cases of utilizing old buildings in various ways. Abandoned buildings of closed schools were transformed in cultural spaces such as Gaekju Literary House, Yasong Art Gallery and Artistic Genius Republic of Korea. And old buildings were transformed into new spaces such as a café and a personal office through painting and some repair work. A good example of the transformation is Cheongsong Inn (President: Park Gyeong-heum), which opened last year. The high-class pension was built by remodeling the building of a 30-year-old hall for senior citizens."I saw a decrepit building at a place with a good view behind Mangmijeong. I found out that the building was a hall for senior citizens, and it had been neglected for years since losing its function," said Park. "I managed to buy the building after explaining its usage to the residents and getting their consent."Park found the building more decrepit than he had thought. He had to invest more money in the dismantling and remodeling of the building than the money he paid for the building. Reinforcement work was done to repair damaged or weakened parts, and he tried to preserve the original external appearance of the building from 30 years ago.As soon as it opened, Cheongsong Inn of the 30-year-old remodeled building began to be promoted through word of mouth. After Daemyung Resort Cheongsong opened and Cheongsong was listed in UNESCO'S Global Geoparks Network, Cheongsong has become more popular and more tourists come to Cheongsong Inn.Park, Sook-Ja, CEO of Songrimjeong : A True Delicacy – "Pork Bossam Accompanied with Aged Kimchi ＆ Fatsia"After touring old traditional buildings, there is a restaurant befitting the picturesque landscape. It is none other than Songrimjeong located at the heart of Jungpyeong Pine Forest.Driving out of the Cheongsong IC from Sangju~Yeongdeok Highway and heading towards Jinbo-myeon, you will come across a bridge on the left. Jungpyeong Pine Forest will unfold before your eyes after crossing the bridge. At the center of the thick forest is where you will find Songrimjeong which is surrounded by pine trees which are centuries old.Songrimjeong is a restaurant which serves traditional Korean course meals. It is worthy to take note that this restaurant is conservative on its use of meat and serves more vegetarian dishes than other Korean restaurants of the same class. They also serve dishes which uses vegetables in season as if they are meat. Young fatsia sprouts are either served raw or deep fried while mountain herbs are used to make Korean-style pancakes which are a delicacy offered by this unique restaurant. Pork is eaten in a rather unusual way. Boiled pork is placed on top of aged kimchi topped with a sliver of Cheongyang chili and garlic. To that, a fatsia sprout is dipped in vinegary gochujang paste is added on top. The contents are wrapped in the kimchi and eaten. You will be able to taste saltiness, savoriness, aroma, and spiciness all in one bite.Sweet and sour shiitake mushrooms, salad made with Cheongsong apples, and soup made with marsh snails harvested from untainted waters embody the flavors Cheongsong has to offer. The array of vibrant colors also seems to add a sense of elegance to the dishes. Moreover, Songrimjeong offers courses half the price of other restaurants in major cities making it less of a burden to dine there.Park, Sook-Ja, the CEO of Songrimjeong says, "We try to offer food which still have their natural flavors using natural seasonings." She boasted, "The Korean dishes served at Songrimjeong is pleasing to the eyes, enjoyed by through the mouth, and is easy on the stomach."
CheongSong Forum dreams of becoming a Korean Davos Forum.Finding solutions to the global crisis at Cheongsong, where there is a slow city, a geopark and a national park"Coexistence of humans and nature" is one of the most important tasks in the human history. As humanities and social science develop, the history of conquest and destruction repeats itself. For this reason, the balance of nature is being broken or faces change. Large seismic earthquakes and tidal waves and abnormal weather phenomena, such as ozone depletion, greenhouse effects, El Niño and La Niña, can be fatal threats to the human civilization. To solve problems between humans and nature—the most primal and fateful problems ever, world-renowned scholars gathered at Cheongsong and put their heads together. You may wonder why they chose Cheongsong as a place for a forum.Cheongsong is one of the smallest cities in Korea, with a population of 26,000 people, located in a remote area. But Cheongsong is like a jewel to them. It is the only city in the world that has been awarded the Slow City status and has a UNESCO geopark and a national park. The scholars regarded Cheongsong as a place where humans and nature coexist most stably in the world. For two days on Mar 30 and 31, 2018, about 500 global experts from Korea, the UK, Italy, Australia, Uruguay, Japan and other countries gathered at Daemyung Resort Cheongsong, to attend CheongSong Forum.CheongSong Forum Opens to Discuss Coexistence between Humans and NatureThe opening ceremony of CheongSong Forum was held under the theme "coexistence of humans and nature" at Daemyung Resort Cheongsong, in the morning on Mar 30. Synn Ilhe, an honorary chairman of CheongSong Forum (president of Keimyung Univerity) stressed the importance of the forum in his welcoming speech."Today, this forum will prove the possibility that things bearing the characteristics of Cheongsong can be one of the most global," said Synn. "CheongSong Forum will be the foundation to prepare environmental policies, inherit and develop traditional arts and establish bonds of friendship with other areas."Former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his support for the forum. He said in a video, "The climate change issue is not limited to certain countries. It is significant that local cities like Cheongsong take lead in solving climate change problems." He also added, "I hope Cheongsong can become a new model and an exemplary case to invigorate farming villages in Korea."Novelist Kim Joo-young, the keynote speaker, said that the forum can be seen as a "counterattack by Cheongsong at the crisis of local extinctions." Kim also said, "The crisis of the extinction of local governments, including Cheongsong-gun, is approaching fast. Cheongsong-gun faced such a crisis and has made the best use of its natural assets to become a global city brand and has exerted its competences in the MICE industry and other industries. And it finally hosts CheongSong Forum."Korean and Foreign Experts Stress in Unison "Sustainable Development for the Coexistence of Humans and Nature"Helga Chulepin, a member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, gave the first keynote speech titled "UNESCO global geoparks and SDG (sustainable development goals)" at CheongSong Forum 2018. Chulepin said, "Conflicts between humans and nature are mostly caused by humans, for example, population growth and humans' use of natural resources." She also stressed that "such conflicts should be resolved based on technology and knowledge." She explained the Constitution of Ecuador, saying that Ecuador is a country that values nature the most in the world. She said, "The constitution contains the phrase 'worship of nature' and provisions of the Constitution contain the expression 'nature's rights,'" adding that "Ecuadoreans regard nature as a being like a human being and protect nature's rights."The second keynote speech was given by Sohn Dehyun, the coordinator of the National Cittaslow Corea Network.' Sohn said, "Happiness can never be found from standing against nature. It can be found from harmonizing with nature." He also warned of danger caused byhuman activities destroying nature, saying that humans are engaging in a fierce World War Ⅲ fight with nature. He added, "About 15 million people were killed during World War I, and over 50 million during World War II. World War Ⅲ would claim far more lives, and slow cities would help stop the war."Based on the keynote speech, the forum was divided into four sections: geopark, slow city, climate change and geotourism. In the geopark session, Jang Yun-deuk, a professor at Kyungpook National University, explained the efforts of Cheongsong to be listed in UNESCO'S Global Geoparks Network and those who made the efforts behind the scenes. Choi Ok-gon, a research fellow of the National Geoparks of Korea, gave a presentation about the current situation of national geoparks, the concept of geoparks and cases of geoparks where humans and nature coexist. Akinobu Ishimatsu, an official from Aso UNESCO Global Geopark, gave a presentation on Aso UNESCO Global Geopark. In the slow city session, Pier Giorgio Oliveti, general secretary of Cittaslow International, explained the spirit, purposes and future directions of Cittaslow International. He showed humans' life in cities where the life is adapted to nature, with examples of slow cities in Italy, Iceland and Norway. Nigel Bell, representative of the Katoomba residents' meeting, explained natural resources of Katoomba, Australia, and talked about how residents use the natural resources, using pictures and videos. Timothy Jung, a professor of Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK, talked about how people can have an indirect experience of world heritages if the technology of augmented reality is applied. In the climate change and geotourism sessions on the second day, current phenomena and tasks facing humans were discussed. Kim Tae-young, a professor at Gyeongsang National University, explained climate change and counterstrategies in the agricultural field. He argued that there is an urgent need for a great shift in energy policies and that a foundation to reduce greenhouse gases should be established. Kim Chang-hwan, a professor at Kangwon National Uniersity, stressed the importance of geotourism and geo-storytelling. Park Min-young, a professor at Sungshin University, stressed the importance of the conditions and evaluations of Cheongsong's geotourism. Lee Su-jae, a senior researcher at the Korea Environment Institute, emphasized that the conservation of natural resources can have a positive effect on tourism profits and that natural resources can be used in various industries.CheongSong ForumDeclarationThe ultimate goal of life is in the pursuit of happiness. In modern society, nature has been destroyed, life ravaged, and local communities fallen in crisis of extinction due to the conflict between countries, urban expansion, environmental destruction and climate change caused by human greed. We have gathered in Cheongsong, an "area of clean nature" to explore new possibilities that the whole humanity can be happy together from various angles through a solution, that is, "coexistence of humans and nature."We seriously discussed human life and ways to bring about sustainable development in local communities for the last two days. As a result, we have concluded that we must keep Cheongsong fully invigorated through the coexistence of humans and nature while recovering the breadth of mind and pursuing the value of being slow to gain happiness, the ultimate goal of life. All participants here hope that the results of this forum for the "coexistence of humans and nature" will become a foundation for happiness in the world beyond local communities and hereby urge the whole world to join our efforts made with this purpose.

Mineral watergood for stomach illnesses, and hot spring water rich in minerals.Nature has treasure within it.Dalgi Mineral Spring, Sinchon Mineral Spring, Solgi Hot Spring, Solsam Hot SpringMedical books written by Korean ancestors, including Donguibogam written by Heo Jun (1539-1615), often say that water is medicine. The books explain that mineral water is good for the body and treats intestinal diseases and that good hot spring water treats skin illnesses. In the past when medical technology was far behind what we have today, mineral water and hot spring water were the best medicines and treasure in nature.Cheongsong has this treasure in abundance. Mineral water gushes from faucets installed in front of restaurants, and hot spring water, rich in minerals, makes the skin smooth and bright.Particularly around Dalgi Mineral Spring, there are all sorts of delicacies, such as chicken dishes, wild mushroom dishes and mountain vegetable dishes, that would appeal to people's taste buds.Wellness means a combination of well-being, well-being and fitness. Cheongsong itself is wellness.Dalgi Mineral SpringDalgi Mineral Spring is located in Bugok-ri, an area 5 ㎞ away east of Cheongsong-eup Office, Cheongsong-gun. During the reign of King Cheoljong of Joseon (1849-1863), Kwon Seong-ha retired to the countryside in Cheongsong after serving the governmental position of Geumbudosa. One day, residents found water spouting out from between rocks during the construction of waterways. They tasted the water and then let out belches and felt comfortable in the stomach. Kwon knew that it was mineral water and developed mineral springs at places where the water was found. There are five to six mineral springs called Sangtang, Jungtang, Wontang, etc. These mineral springs have been together called Dalgi Mineral Spring. Dalgi is the old name of the area. The water from Dalgi Mineral Spring contains a large amount of carbonic acid and has iron content. That is why the water is known to have efficacies in treating stomach diseases and skin illnesses. There are a lot of restaurants between mineral springs, and most of the old restaurants are called "inn restaurants." They were named inn restaurants because people visited there to have their illnesses treated by drinking the mineral water and got accommodation at these inns. It was difficult to travel to Cheongsong, which was surrounded by mountains. A little past Dalgi Mineral Spring, there are Juwangsan Wolwei Trail, Dalgi Falls and Artistic Genius Republic of Korea. Tourists can visit this mineral spring before or after a meal and gain the breadth of mind, too.Sinchon Mineral SpringIf you go out of the E. Cheongsong-Yeongyang IC, Sangju-Yeongdeok Expressway and take the road toward Jinbo-myeon Office, you will immediately see Sinchon Mineral Spring. During the Joseon period, the court inspected water from all mineral springs across the country. The record says that the water from Sinchon Mineral Spring had the most heavy and unique taste and thus had efficacies in treating stomach diseases.Sinchon Mineral Spring spans across the whole area of Sinchon-ri. Interestingly, mineral water gushes in most areas of Sinchon-ri. There are mineral water places in front of all restaurants and anyone can drink the mineral water. Water from Sinchon Mineral Spring has a large iron content, making mineral water places tinted red. For this reason, the ground in front of all restaurants looks reddish.Around Sinchon Mineral Spring, there are restaurants serving great chicken dishes. Chicken are boiled in the mineral water for firm fleshiness and to remove odor. Sinchon Dakgalbi is cooked by seasoning chicken breast with red and spicy paste and mince it just like when cooking Tteokgalbi. It tastes better when wrapped in lettuce with some garlic added. After having a meal, tourists can go to Public Cheongsong Yasong Art Gallery at the entrance of the village to have mental food. What is unique about this galley is that there is only one piece of art work on display. It is a large-scale painting (46 m in width and 7 m in height), titled Daeryangcheongwundo, and it was written by Lee Won-jwa (pen name: Yasong), 80,. The admission is free.Solgi Hot SpringSolgi Hot Spring is between Cheongsong-eup and Dalgi Mineral Spring. Solgi is a combined word of sol (松, meaning "pine tree") and gi (氣, meaning "energy"). The name Solgi Hot Spring means that the hot spring water has the energy of a pine tree, which is one of the ten traditional symbols of longevity. This hot spring is frequented by Cheongsong-gun residents because it is located near the residential area in Cheongsong-eup.The water of Solgi Hot Spring gushes from the 710 m underground, and 100 % spring water is used for both cold and hot baths. The hot spring water is pH 9.58 alkaline sodium bicarbonate water. For this reason, the spring water removes dead skin cells and makes the skin smooth like silk. The spring water is good for skin care and has efficacies in treating rheumatic diseases, muscle pain and skin illnesses. It also has anti-aging effects.Solgi Hot Spring is in Juwangsang Spa Tourist Hotel. The hot spring is perfect for tourists who want to rest and experience therapeutic effects. This hotel has western-style rooms, Korean-style ondol rooms, a banquet hall and a wedding hall. The hotel also offers a Korean buffet anyone can use.Solsaem Hot SpringSolsaem Hot Spring is in Daemyung Resort Cheongsong in front of Juwangsan National Park. The water of this hot spring is gained from two spots developed, each in the 780 m underground and 1,000 m underground. The temperature of the water is maintained high, ranging from 28 ℃ to 31 ℃.The spring water used in Solsaem Hot Spring is gained from two spots and thus have different efficacies. One of the two types of spring water is pH 8.26 alkalescent sodium bicarbonate water. This spring water has such efficacies as enhancing respiration, improving immunity and recovering from wounds or illnesses. The other type is pH 9.02 alkaline sulphate mineral water. This spring water contains sulfate reducing bacteria and thus helps dissolve subcutaneous fat and carbohydrates. It also has great efficacies in treating atopic dermatitis and gastrointestinal diseases and helps eliminate addictive substances from the body by stimulating gastrointestinal movement.Solsaem Hot Spring offers an outdoor hot spring. It is a large-scale hot spring with the area of 1,697㎡ and thus can accommodate a lot of people at the same time. After using the hot spring, tourists can use various facilities in the resort. Visitors can enjoy various kinds of dishes at different restaurants, such as the high-class Korean restaurant Sudalae, the Italian restaurant Patio and an outdoor barbecue restaurant. There are also Cheongsong Information Center and an apple tree park with 999 apple trees in the resort. Juwangsan National Park, Viewing Flower Stone Museum, Cheongsong White Porcelain Exhibition Hall and Simsugwan Pottery Exhibition Hall are in the vicinity of the resort, and they are interesting places to visit.Mineral springs and hot springs in Cheongsong.Songi Garden in front of Daemyung Resort CheongsongA perfect combination of Korean native chickens, chewy when boiled, and wild pine mushroomsThere is a good restaurant that can be recommended to tourists after enjoying mineral and hot springs. It is Songi Garden. The restaurant serves dishes with the perfect combination of chickens and pine mushrooms. Its best dish is "native chicken clean stew," which is cooked by putting radishes and green onions into the meat broth made by boiling chicken bones in water and then boiling Korean native chickens and pine mushrooms in the broth. As the stew is boiled longer, more chicken fat dissolves in the water and permeates pine mushrooms. Then the taste of the pine mushrooms become aromatic and savory. The Korean native chicken has a chewy texture, and the flavor of pine mushrooms fills the mouth at every chew. No artificial flavors are used and only mushrooms and vegetables are used for the taste of the broth, and the broth has clean flavor."Native chicken clean stew" and "native chicken spicy stew" are side by side on the menu. Although spices like powdered red pepper are put in "native chicken spicy stew," "native chicken clean stew" costs more. The reason is that making dishes with a clean and deep flavor is difficult and requires devotion and know-how.At Songi Garden, tourists can taste various traditional dishes cooked with the chef's knowhow, such as "pine mushroom stew," "pine mushroom bulgogi hot pot," "adlay and native chicken boiled with rice," "duck bulgogi" and "Korean set menu with a pine mushroom and soybean paste stew."Songi Garden has been a famous local restaurant in Cheongsong. After Daemyung resort was built near the restaurant, more tourists came to the restaurant. Now, it is known across the county. Recently, tourists from Hong Kong, China, Japan and other countries come to Songi Garden and compliment the dishes served."It has been twenty years since I began cooking dishes with chickens and pine mushrooms that Cheongsong is known for," said Kim Chun-ok, the owner of Songi Garden. "I will make efforts to keep the taste as it is now for customers visiting my restaurant."
Tour of Guam : In the Footsteps of Mother NatureThe beautiful harmony between 'Nature and Man'… Maintaining its reputation as one of the world's best tourist destinationsTours through the untamed junglesGuam, the size of Korea's Geoje Island, has a highly developed tourism industry which attracts thousands of tourists each year. Based upon its natural resources, the island has a variety of tourism elements making it an ideal place from which Cheongsong may gain valuable insight into becoming a tourism hotspot.Visited by 4.5 million tourists in 2017, it is expected that Cheongsong-gun is at the brink of entering an era of 10 million tourists per year. Cheongsong has gained a global reputation for being listed as a UNESCO World Geological Park, re-certified by Cittaslow International, and hosting the Ice Climbing World Cup. As a result, the city's brand value is steadily growing over time.Until now, Cheongsong has only been able to meet tourism demands with extremely limited tourism elements such as Juwangsan National Park and locally grown apples. However, more diverse elements must be developed and supplemented by elements with consideration for 'long-stays', 'return visits' and the 'local economy'.Located about 4 hours by plane, the US territory of Guam is a world-renown tourist destination. Although it is similar in size to Korea's Geoje Island, it is visited by thousands of people from all over the world every year. The tourism elements of Guam can be categorized into those that are natural, artificial, and created over time. The island utilizes its pristine natural resources in the same way as Cheoseong does while having created artificial elements to supplement its weaknesses. Moreover, it has allowed unique and diverse tourism elements to flourish by preserving the indigenous culture which has taken shape over its long history. This journal aims to shed light upon the advanced tourism landscape of Guam divided into three chapters and plans to propose a direction for Cheongsong to develop into a better tourism destination.◆ Million CruiseBeing an island is one of the best tourism elements endowed by the heavens. The reason for this is because it is possible to utilize the unlimited supply of tourism resources and food found offshore. As such, Guam has a highly developed marine sports industry and entertainment culture. The best of which is the Million Cruise. This cruise gives tourists the opportunity to enjoy marine sports out in the open ocean. They are made to wear life vests followed by a short session on safety instruction before being allowed to jump into the sea.Under the emerald-colored ocean, tourists can observe a variety of different fish species just as if they were in a gigantic aquarium. Large fish, the size of an adult's arm, gracefully glide through the water around the tourists while thousands of small, sardine-like fish swim about making the ocean seem like it is filled with stars. If one has the ability to free dive, he or she can dive up to a depth of 3 to 5 meters where they can meet other aquatic lifeforms. For those who do not like getting wet, the cruise also offers a chance for tourists to see pods of dolphins or porpoises on deck. Seeing dolphins on the cruise is easy since the ship goes far out onto the open ocean. Since dolphins tend to appear next to sailing ships in comparison to those that are anchored, the captain constantly propels the ship forward in search of dolphins hiding beneath the surface while occasionally stopping in between. If in luck, tourists may also spot sea turtles or even a whale during the cruise.Tourists can also enjoy fishing on deck. Fishing rods and bait prepared beforehand are used to catch tropical reef fish. It is possible to catch fish the size of adult hands just by dropping the fishing line with some bait on the hook. While tourists have fun fishing, they are served fresh tuna sashimi and beer as a complimentary service.Children who are not old enough to swim in the ocean can enjoy playing on the small pool installed on the ship.◆Jungle TourThe jungles of Guam, which is more accurately describe as being close to a pristine and natural state, arouses curiosity while astounding visitors with its grandiose scale. A jungle tour begins on a boat at the mouth of the river where it meets the ocean. It takes tourists into an environment which is not easy to come by.A small piece of bread dropped on the water led to a gigantic catfish breaking the surface to eat it. The tour allowed us to meet various flora and fauna living in the marsh. The professional guide, who was highly familiar with the jungle ecosystem, explained the behaviors of animals and plants found in Guam as well as the environment in which they live.It was interesting to see land crabs and coconut crabs, which I had only seen on TV, a meter away from each other. Since they were wild, we were only able to see them from the boat for safety reasons. We were told that coconut crabs dig burrows at the base of coconut trees and become bigger each time they molt. Coconut crabs used in cooking are said to typically be more than 50 years old. Furthermore, we were also told that TV shows showing crabs being caught, cooked, and eaten right away are exaggerated. Coconut crabs have a distinct smell to them in addition to being poisonous; therefore, they must be processed for about a week before they are edible.◆ Fresh Ingredients and Diverse CuisineBeing an island with a tropical climate, there is an abundance of seafood and high-quality tropical fruits in Guam. Due to this, there is a variety of dishes which use these two ingredients. Since Guam is a territory of the United States frequented by tourists, western style cuisine is prevalent throughout the island. The most common dishes served throughout the island is grilled fish. Sauces made with tropical fruits are eaten alongside the fish. The savoriness of the fish and sweetness of the sauce come together in harmony causing an endorphin explosion in brain.Usually, part of the ingredients used in the day's dishes are presented at the entrance of restaurants to show that they are using fresh ingredients. In doing so, it satisfies the curiosity of the customer who would otherwise be wondering what ingredients the chef uses to cook the dishes they are about to eat and instills a sense of pride in the restaurants.Jung-Min Lee (44·Seoul), who visits Guam every year states, "It is the best place to go for a family vacation. Our family usually goes on a lot of nature exploration tours and my children love it. I especially think that is fun seeing that the environment changes every time we go."The local guide, Tommy Kang, says "Tour patterns in Guam is no different from the way it was ten years ago. We were able to maintain Guam's status as one of the world's best tourist destinations because we made sure that the guidelines to protect and preserve nature was followed throughout the growth of the industry." He added by mentioning, "I hope other cities that want to grow into a tourist hotspot learn that they need to have the right civic awareness and clear way of thinking geared towards developing tourism as the main industry."The million cruise is recommended to those who are seeking to enjoying marine sports when visiting Guam. It's an activity which the entire family can enjoy while being able to experience diverse attractions and fun activities. You can enjoy snorkeling as one of the activities offered on the Million Cruise. Go exploring the undersea world after receiving a simple lesson on how to use the equipment and putting on safety equipment such as a life vest.
About 18% of independence fighters during the late Joseon period came from Gyeongsangbuk-do.Cheongsong produced 93 independence fighters, the largest number of all si and gun in Korea.Cheongsong is sacred place of national salvation.Ancestors in the Cheongsong area fought more fiercely for the country than in any other area during the late Joseon period and died for the country without any regret. In the small mountainous village Cheonsong, scholars who read books, farmers who weeded fields, and women who sewed clothes at home had the same mind when it came to national salvation.Because a huge number of independence fighters were killed in 1896 (byeongsin year) when the anti-Japanese struggle arose in Cheongsong, descendants have lived without knowing the history of independence fighters in the area.Fortunately, their lofty achievements, large and small, were brought to light one after another since 1995 when the field diary written during the byeongsinchangui was discovered. As 3.1 Independence Movement against the Japanese Empire spread across the country on March 1, 1891, residents of the Cheongsong area came out to the market place, waiving Taegeukgi, the Korean national flag. Peaceful demonstrations were held, and a wave of Taegeukgi was formed across the Cheongsong area, from the southernmost Hyeonseo-myeon to the northernmost Jinbo-myeon.Independence fighters against the Japanese colonial rule and byeongsinchanguiOn October 8, 1895 (the 32 year of year of King Gojong's reign), a political upheaval masterminded by Miura Goro, the Japanese minister to Korea, took place. And Empress Myeongseong was stabbed to death during the political upheaval. The upheaval, called the assissination of Empress Myeongseong, was aimed at strengthening the Japanese power on the Korean Peninsula. Afterwards, Japan carried out the Eulmi reform under the pretext of opening up the door to Joseon by appointing figures were faithful to Japan. The reform was forcibly implemented at a time when the Empress was ruthlessly murdered and the Joseon government was severely swayed, which led the Korean people to harbor excessive hostility towards Japan beyond opposition. In the meantime, the so-called "ordinance prohibiting topknots" forcibly went into effect and the Korean people were compelled to cut their topknots inherited from their parents although they lived on the foundation of Confucianism. Such one-way policies prompted a movement of anti-Japanese and anti-opening, led by Confucian scholars.Loyal army's resistance took place in Cheongsong in 1896, and it was led by Sim Seong-ji (Pen name: Soryu, 1831-1904), who was from the Cheonsong Sim clan. Their command unit was located at an inn in Cheongsong-gun. Soryu, who was well-versed in Confucianism and was over 60 at that time, was resolute in determining to protect the nation and many people wholeheartedly followed him as independence fighters. On May 14 1896, a battle broke out at Gameun-ri, Cheongsong. Cheongsong's anti-Japanese loyal army carried out a cooperative offensive against Japanese troops moving towards the north, in cooperation with Icheon's anti-Japanese loyal army led by Kim Ha-rak (1846-1896) and Uiseong's anti-Japanese loyal army led by Kim Sang-jong (1847-1909). At that time, Cheongsong's anti-Japanese loyal army consisted of 75 leaders from the nobility and about 180 people such as hunters, farmers, and peddlers, none of whom had never received any military training. Nevertheless, they were armed with such strong patriotism that they would not back down until the last moment. They killed 10 Japanese soldiers, making other Japanese combatants run away. Historians regarded the Gameun-ri battle as extraordinary. They said that if the loyal troops had failed in defeating the Japanese troops, the Japanese troops could have extended their power to the central part of the Korean peninsula. Seo Jeom, the director of the Anti-Japanese Loyal Army Memorial Park, Cheonsong, said, "The Royal Army Day was designated as a national holiday in 2010 in order to succeed to their patriotism and their spirit of loving the people and to remember the historic meanings of loyal troops who voluntarily stood up against Japan at a time of national crisis."Cheongsong's anti-Japanese loyal army and the 100th anniversary of Cheongsong Royal Troops Resistance and 3.1 Independence MovementAnti-Japanese Loyal Army Memorial Park and Jeogwonilgi and GyeongseoryupyeonThe ceremony in honor of anti-Japanese loyal armies is held annualy at Anti-Japanese Loyal Army Memorial Park, Cheongsong, jointly by local governments of Gyeongsangbuk-do and Cheongsong-gun. The ancestral tablets of loyal armies whose soldiers were killed in the fighting against Japan across the country, are enshrined at Chunguisa Shrine, located in Anti-Japanese Loyal Army Memorial Park, Cheongsong. Chunguisa Shrine accommodates the ancestral tablets of a total of 2,537 independence fighters including Ahn Jung-geun, who assassinated Ito Hirobumi, Choi Ik-hyeon, Heo Wui and Lee Kang-nyeon, and Sin Dol-seok, a commander of plebeian origin. A total of 468 independence fighters came from Gyeongsangbuk-do, accounting for about 18% of all anti-Japanese loyal armies operating across the country, Among the 468 independence fighters, 93 came from Cheonsong. It is confirmed that the number is, as of today, larger than that that of any other si or gun. A memorial tower of significance was erected in 2016. It is Memorial Tower for Nameless Independence Fighters. It was set up in Cheongsong in an attempt to honor their meritorious deeds and pay respects to the souls of 150,000 independence fighters across the nation. Jeogwonilgi has contributes the most to the construction of Anti-Japanese Loyal Army Memorial Park in Cheonsong. The book which had been handed down through generations in the Cheongsong Sim clan was disclosed to the world in 1995, verifying the history of the Gameun-ri battle. Stories about Cheongsong's anti-Japanese loyal army taking part in the Gameun-ri battle had been handed down orally only until then.Jeogwonilgi descibes what happened during the war. "Jeogwon" means red color, and the name Jeogwonilgi means that it is a diary written in the year of byeongsin (丙申). Jeogwonilgi is different from existing war diaries describing about war only because it describes independence fighters' family origins and operation methods in detail. The diary also recorded the names of aristocrats who took part as Cheongsong's anti-Japanese loyal army and the amount of money they donated for soldier training and operation. The diary shows that 65 soldiers who worked at Daejangso as regular soldiers were paid one ryang a day and 48 soldiers dispatched to each area were paid two ryang, while working two days a month. The diary also says that the nobility donated over 3,000 ryang in setting up Cheongsonguijin at an early stage. It was tantamount to the amount of money which could buy several traditional Korean houses. The diary shows that all the residents in Cheongsong, noble or ignoble, took part in a campaign to protect their country as one and social leaders of the times carried out noblesse oblige (moral obligation corresponding to a high social status) when they donated their assets themselves for national salvation.Cheongsong's independence fighters thought that being spiritually united, mature, and patriotic through Confucianism was as important as military resistance. Seo Seok-hwa (1860-1924), a son of Seo Hyo-won, a Uiyeongdo commander, who led Cheongsong's anti-Japanese loyal army, published Gyeongseoryupyeon (經說類編) with the aim to secure a pioneer status to resolve issues of the period and to be united by relying on the academic identity of the Jeongjae School, which was represented by Ryu Chi-myung (pen name: Jeongjae, 1777-1861). As the translated Korean version of Gyeongseoryupyeon was recently published by the Korean Studies Institute, its value is newly assessed.
Touring Guam Molded by Time333 Years of Spanish RuleA history of control by 3 different countries made into a tourism resourceMarch 6, 1521It was the day a new history began on the island of Guam. To explain further, it was the day the hidden jewel of Guam was first introduced to mankind. The 16th century was a time when mankind set sail towards a new and unknown continent and a period when western nations sailed around the globe discovering new lands. One of the gems the Europeans discovered during this period was Guam. The first country which discovered and claimed the island was Spain. As time passed, it came under the control of the US followed by Japan. It was finally annexed as a territory of the United States which it remains a part of until this day. That is why the cultures of Spain, the US, and Japan can all be found on Guam. Due to the influence of being under Spanish rule for most of its history, the population is predominantly catholic while the main language spoken is English being a present-day territory of the US. Although the island's rule under the Japanese was short-lived, it is one of the places in the world where it is possible to see a piece of Japan's history riddled with the scars from WWII.◆ The History of GuamIn 1519, the Portuguese-born Spanish explorer, Ferdinand Magellan (1480~1521), set sail on an expedition to circumnavigate the world with a fleet of 5 ships including the Victoria funded by the King of Spain. Magellan's fleet arrived in Umatac Bay located on the Southern coast of Guam on March 6, 1521. They found a place to set their anchors and to make repairs. They spent 3 days on Guam and was captivated by the beauty of the island. The cobalt waters, white sand beaches, green coconut trees, and juicy tropical fruits were enough to stimulate their senses. Especially, the natives living on Guam called Chamorros kindly welcomed the Spanish explorers. Although it was the first time the Chamorros encountered foreigners, they showed the explorers their hospitality by offering food and supplying them with needed supplies. Upon completion of repairs to their ships and having received a lavish welcome from the locals, the Spanish explorers were captured by greed to possess the beautiful island forever. Eventually, Guam came under Spanish control for a period of 333 years. After control was transferred to the US after the Spanish-American War in 1898, the island was invaded and taken over by the Japanese during the Pacific War in 1941. The Japanese also forcefully relocated many Koreans to Guam and subjected them to all sorts of hardships. The US regained control over Guam in 1944 and declared it as an official territory in 1950 which it remains as up until today.◆ Tourist Sites from the Colonial PastThe Plaza de España is located at the heart of the capital, Hagåtña. Originally the Palace of the Spanish Governor, it was mostly destroyed during WWII and only a part of it remains standing today. Next to the plaza is where the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica is located. It was the first church built on Guam in 1699 and its white exterior is breathtaking. A statue of John Paul II stands in front of the cathedral. It was erected in 1981 in honor of the pope's visit to Guam. The funny thing about it is that it was made to rotate 360 degrees throughout the day as symbol of spreading the pope's blessing in all directions.Paseo Park has the meaning of "Susana's Park" in the native Chamorro language. It is a park built on a man-made peninsula. After being liberated from Japan in 1944, the remnants of the war in Hagåtña were dumped into the ocean with bulldozers and a beautiful park was built on top of the newly claimed land. There is a baseball field amongst other sports facilities in the park and it is a place where tourists and locals come to relax during the weekend. Furthermore, a replica of the Statute of Liberty stands at the tip of the peninsula. The statue was present from the Boy Scouts of America in 1950 in commemoration of its 40th anniversary.◆ History of the ChamorrosAs it might be expected, the native Chamorro people constitute the majority of Guam's population. They speak their native language as well as English. Most Chamorros are farmers growing crops such as coconuts, cacao, sugar cane, coffee, rice, corn, and tropical fruits. Moreover, they are also in charge of reenacting and reconstructing traditional culture in the tourism sector. They are sharing their culture to visitors at major tourist sites or parks around the island by reconstructing traditional dwellings or wearing traditional clothing. The prime example of such efforts is the Chamorro Village. It is a place where visitors can experience Chamorro traditions and culture. Handcrafted items are sold in the village and tourists can try traditional dishes such as barbeque seasoned with local chili peppers and red rice.Perhaps the most popular tourist site on Guam related to the Chamorros is Two Lovers Point. The story dates back to the Spanish colonial era. The chief's daughter fell madly in love with a Chamorro man, but the chief wished for her to get married to a Spanish officer. They loved each other so much that they chose death instead of being forcefully married to someone they did not love. They stood at the cliff overlooking Tumon Beach and jumped into the ocean below with their long hair braided together. The two disappeared into the vast ocean and the cliff came to be known as the Two Lovers Point, in essence, the Cliff of Love. It is a "must-see" site for lovers around the globe up until this very day. The bell installed at the site contributes greatly to its popularity due to the belief that if two lovers ring the bell at the same time, their love will last forever. One of the relics left behind by ancient Chamorros are latte stones. It has been said that Chamorros built houses dating as far back as 500 B.C. They constructed houses raised on top of stone pillars to avoid the torrential downpours common to tropical climates. The term latte stone refers to the 6 to 8 stone pillars standing in two rows. The houses were built on hemispherical stones called tasa placed on top of the pillars called haligi. Although no one has solved the mystery of what type of dwelling the Chamorros built on top of the latte stones, they are still relics which prove the continuation of the Chamorro's history as well as being another tourism element of Guam.Guam was discovered by Spanish explorers on March 6, 1519 and was subject to Spain's colonial rule for 333 years. After the Spanish, control went back and forth between the US and Japan resulting in a unique culture on the island influenced by the three countries.Plaza de España was built on the site of the Palace of the Spanish Governor which was destroyed during the Pacific War. At the center of the plaza is a statue of Pope John Paul II which rotates to symbolize that it is extending its blessing to all corners of the world.Paseo Park was built on top of a man-made peninsula built from the rubbles left behind by the war after the island was retaken from the Japanese. It is a popular walking path among locals due to the beautiful landscape and sculptures found there. The native Chamorros also play a big role in the tourism sector. Through the restoration and reenactment of traditions, they present tourists with Guam's history, valuable lessons and leave a lasting impression in their hearts.Chamorros play an important role in various areas within the tourism sector by making use of craftsmanship handed down through generations. They present tourists with interesting experiences such as making handcrafted items out of palm leaves or lighting fire using simple tools. The island of Guam is surrounded by the ocean and has a tropical climate. Therefore, dwellings were located in places near the coast. As such, natives used boats as one of the main modes of transportation on the island due to their high mobility. The traditional canoes made out of a single tree trunk were used for fishing and transporting crop to distant places. It is common for famous tourist spots to have its own story. Perhaps, the best tourist site related to the Chamorros is the Two Lovers Point. It is a cliff where two Chamorro lovers jumped into the ocean in order to protect their love for eternity. The cliff is now a must-see site for lovers all across the globe.Latte stones are monumental heritage left behind by the ancient Chamorros who constructed houses since 500 B.C. Through these ancient relics, it was possible to rediscover the continuing history of the Chamorros. They serve as another tourism element of Guam which appeals to tourists.
Writer Kim Joo-younggladly welcomes people.A literary house of a living writer"I hope that people in paincan get comfort from reading my books."A literary house of a living writer is rare in the world.Literary houses are mostly built after writers have died. That is why Gaekju Literary House in Cheongsong is special. It is themed on Kim Joo-young's iconic novel Gaekju (The Innkeeper), and Kim, 80, currently writes vigorously as a prominent writer in the Korean literary circle.Gaekju Literary House is said to be "living and breathing."The literary house is not stationary but changes dynamically. Writer Kim has played a large role. He spends half the year in Cheongsong and shows visitors his writing activities and even his private life with his friends and acquaintances. Visitors can not only gain information from the exhibitions but also meet the writer to talk about his works and communicate with him. Every time people visit Gaekju Literary House, they find something new there.Writer Kim Joo-young's lifeKim Joo-young was born in Jibo-myeon, Cheongsong-gun in1939. His home was in a mountainous village where there was no factory or railway within 40 km, and he said I "suffered from dire poverty from the moment I was cut off from the umbilical cord to be born." In 1959, he entered the Literary Creation Department, Seorabeol Art College and won a scholarship there. One day, he asked Park Mok-wol, his professor and a poet, to read his ten poems and got a cold remark "You don't have talent in poetry." Kim came back to Cheongsong and volunteered for military service. In 1964, after completing his military service, he got a job as a bookkeeper at the Andong Tobacco Producers Cooperative in his hometown to make a living. During the period he lost literature, he lost his father and sibling and wasted his life drinking heavily to the point of having an intestinal rupture. In 1970, Kim quit his job and began writing again at age 30. That year, he wrote and submitted Summer Hunting (Yeoreum sanyang), which chosen for the second-place prize by the journal Literature Monthly (Wolgan munhak). In the following year, he won the prize for new writers by the same journal for A Period of Dormancy (Hyumyeongi), through which he took his first step in the literary circle. In 1974, he began to collect materials to write a saga. For five years, he visited over 200 market places in the countryside across the country, collecting novel materials. In 1979, the novel Gaekju began to be published serially in The Seoul Shinmun. Kim wrote the story he had prepared, for nearly five years until 1983 through 1,465 episodes.During this period, he was interviewed by a press agency. In the interview, he told an untold story about how the novel Gaekju was written, saying, "I could not stay at home for more than ten days a month and roamed market places around the country, carrying a camera, a telescope and a notebook with me." Gaekju was published in 1981 and won Kim the 1st Yoo Juhyeon Literary Award. The nine volumes of Gaekju were published at Changbi Publishers in 1984 and then Kim stopped writing Gaekju. Afterwards, he depicted street life of the ruled class in his novels like Yajeong, The Wanderers (Hwacheok) and Righteous Band of Brigands (Hwalbindo). The materials of his works were the general people's lives and poverty. This trend continued to appear in The Roar of Thunder (Cheondung sori), Fishermen Don't Break off Reeds (Gogijabineun galdaereul kkeokji anneunda), Stingray (Hongeo), Anchovy (Myeolchi) and The Empty House (Binjin). He has received several literary awards including the Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award, the Korean Novel and Literature Award, the Yi San Literary Award and the Daesan Literary Award. In 2007, he received the Eungwan Cultural medal. In 2013, Kim completed the novel Gaekju, which had lingered in his mind for years, by writing the tenth volume after 30 years, thus making a great achievement in the history of Korean literature.Gaekju Literary HouseGaekju Literary House opened on Jun 10, 2014, and the literary house was built using the facilities of a closed school (Jinbo Jeil High School). The area of the literary house is 24,771 ㎡, and the project cost totaled 7.5 billion won (government funds - 3.75 billion won, provincial funds – 1,125 million won, county funds – 2,625 million won). Cheongsong-gun saved construction costs by extending and rebuilding of a closed school building. The three-story building with an area of 4,640 ㎡ consists of the Gaekju exhibition hall where visitors can comprehensively explore the novel; Yeosonghyeon (與松軒), Kim's writing room; a novel library; Space Gaekju; a special exhibition room; a video education room; a creation studio; a writing room of resident writers; training facilities; a seminar room; a café; a creation hall; and a multi-purpose hall. The 1st and 2nd exhibition halls show Kim's writing background and process in detail. Visitors can see not only the writing instruments and squared manuscript papers Kim used but also the course of Kim's life while he wrote literary works. Also on display is a manuscript he wrote with a sharp fountain pen, holding a magnifying glass, to write more words at a time when paper was precious. The exhibitions show literary students Kim's exemplary conduct, as well. The exhibitions also impart essential knowledge about peddlers in the late Joseon period who appear in the novel Gaekju. Their appearance, history, life and rules can be learned through interesting things to see, such as replicas, pictures and video materialsOn the second floor, the exhibition shows materials Kim has collected to write novels, travelling around the world. Kim is as talented in photography as in writing. His photos contain great techniques and hidden stories and even photographers compliment his photos. Particularly, many of the photos show market day scenes around the country and some photos well compare past and present scenes of a market place that is the background of Gaekju. In some of the space, there are art and sculpture exhibitions all year around.A Gaekju Literary House commentator said, "Gaekju Literary House is not only a space to explore the novel Gaekju Kim wrote but also a place that contains Kim's life. He has a strong affection for the literary house and has donated his personal items and even articles he had cherished and kept like a family treasure. Even now, he donates his articles to be displayed in the literary house."And Gaekju Literature Village will open this year. A theme village will be created behind the Gaekju traditional market, Jinan-ri, Jinbo-myeon. The village was designed by combining nostalgia for a traditional market and local resident's reminiscences. Cheongsong-gun has remodeled 52 houses and built a house resembling the novelist's birthplace, a Gaekju exhibition hall, a tavern, a craft workshop and the like by investing 16.3 billion won (government funds - 3.4 billion won, provincial funds – 300 million won, county funds – 12.6 billion won). In this village, tourists can experience the peddler culture and fully enjoy the mood of a traditional village."Come and have a cup of tea."I've come back from Yeojuwhere I bought potteryto adorn the literary house. It has been four years since Gaekju Literary House opened, but the literary house is still adorned with new articles. The writer Kim Joo-young goes anywhere across the country when the seasons change or he finds something good to adorn the literary house. Of course, he pays out of his own pocket to buy things to adorn the literary house."Gaekju Literary House is like my face and my house. Of course, I should adorn the literary house with pretty things. I know many people in the art circle. I get their advice and get inspiration from them. The literary house is mostly adorned by me," said the novelist.Gaekju Literary Househas another name, which is a "living literary house.""It is rare to build a literary house of a living writer. Cheongsong-gun made a big decision and gave me benefits," said Kim. "I think I can repay the benefits by devoting my remaining years to this literary house."Kim talked about a long-term prisoner he encountered a few years ago. He heard that people released from prison would gather at Jinbo Intercity Bus Terminal at dawn one day. Driven by curiosity, he went to the terminal early at dawn. Before long, people released from prison gathered in front of the terminal and one of them introduced himself as an ex-long-term prisoner to Kim and asked for a cigarette. Kim gave him a pack of cigarettes and a lighter out of a generous heart. Then, the man took out three books—Gaekju volume 1, 2 and 3—out of his bag and gave them to Kim in return, saying, "This is a very fun novel." Kim did not tell him that he was the author and this incident made him think deeply. The protagonists of his novels are mostly people who are marginalized in society, physically disabled or troubled with problems such as a family problem. Kim puts positive mind-sets in the protagonists and gives them the key to overcome such lives, providing readers "comfort" as a present. Kim thought that the ex-long-term prisoner, he encountered at the terminal. also received comfort as a present from him."Like my novel An Unexpected Life, I need to look back on my life at age 80 and meet more people to give them comfort and encouragement," said Kim. "If you are exhausted and have a difficult life, come to Gaekju Literary House. I'd like to serve a cup of tea."
Cheongsong is scattered with interesting cultural sites. It has natural resources so abundant that it has joined the Global Geoparks Network of Unesco. It was also authorized consecutively as a slow city by Cittaslow International in recognition of the convivial life there. In the late Joseon Dynasty, Cheongsong was one of the places with the largest anti-Japanese resistance troops in the country. It is also known as home of internationally renowned figures in culture and art.Last year, 4.5 million people visited Cheongsong.Tourists are crowding Cheongsong, one of the smallest cities in Korea, with a population of 26,000 people. Cheongsong's tourism has been focused on natural resources, such as Juwangsan National Park and Jusanji Reservoir. As it is expected that 10 million annual tourists would visit the city, people say that Cheongsong has to provide tourists with various things to see by adding cultural elements to the city's tourism. This plan aims to discover cultural resources of Cheongsong and explore ways to prepare for welcoming 10 million annual tourists.Nam Kwan, an artist likened to a big pine tree in the art field! His life is made into an art town.Nam Kwan's story.Nam Kwan (1911 ~1990) was a figure likened to a big pine tree in Korea's art field. With consistent tenacity and firmness like those of an evergreen pine tree, he worked on art all his life and trained younger students.Born in Bunam-myeon, Cheongsong-gun, Nam Kwan moved to Japan to study fine art at the young age of 14. He won acclaim as an artist in Japan and returned to Korea, where he maintained his acclaim as a recommendation artist in the Western painting department at the 1st National Art Exhibition.Nam was different from other artists. He went abroad again to France to study fine art without enjoying his acclaim in Korea. It took him three months to get to France by ship. In France, he appeased his hunger with bread and milk every day, committing himself to studying art. According to his acquaintances, his hair was thick and lush before he left for France but when he returned to Korea, he had a bald head. It seems that his life in the foreign country was not easy.Nam Kwan won the first prize at the Menton Biennale, an art exhibition with a high reputation that even invited Picasso, surpassing great art masters like Buffet and Tapies. Nam is still loved in both Korea and France.Despite such a poor environment, Nam was invited to Salon de Mai in 1950, the fourth year since he moved to France, through which he became the first-ever Korean artist who entered the international art circle. Later in 1955, Nam won the first prize at the Menton Biennale, surpassing international art masters like Buffet and Tapies. At the time, the Menton Biennale had a high reputation and even invited Picasso. Nam's winning the prize let the world know about Korean artists' talent and status.- Nam Kwan Gallery and Nam Kwan Art VillageNam returned from abroad in 1968 and worked as a professor at Hongik University, which has one of the best art colleges in Korea. He was a recipient of the Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award in 1974 and received an Order of Cultural Merits in 1981.In 1990, he was awarded the National Academy of Arts of The Republic of Korea Prize and he was regarded as a history of Korean art.Nam Kwan Gallery and Nam Kwan Art VillageIf you go from Cheongsong-eup Office toward Dalgi Mineral Spring, you will see a building, located on the left hill before getting to the mineral spring. On the fourth floor of the building, Nam Kwan Gallery has opened along with a café and exhibits Nam Kwan's history. About 20 art pieces, art supplies he used, his notes and even a plane ticket are on display there. Anyone who knows nothing about Nam can track his life, looking at the items on display.Cho Wi-rae, 57, an owner of Nam Kwan Gallery, has been in love with Nam for about 15 years. He began to study about Nam in 2000 when he happened to know that Nam was from Cheongsong. He was working at Cheongsong Community Credit Cooperative at the time. He opened a website called Nam Kwan (www.namkwan.com) in 2003 and has since operated it. He collected art catalogues and pictures of about 3,500 pieces among about 7,000 left by Nam and posted the materials on the website. Cho said, "I didn't have a deep knowledge about art but I became interested when I saw Nam's works. As I did not know much, I began by collecting and organizing everything about him to learn his history."Hopefully, Nam Kwan Art Village will be a new tourist attraction in Cheongsong. Cho has become close with Nam's family while studying about Nam and now even keeps in touch with Nam's family. He visits and cleans Nam's grave every year. Thanks to Cho's effort, Nam Kwan Art Village will be built in and around Bunam-myeon, Cheongsong-gun, an area where Nam grew up. The residents paint murals and make stories about Nam, hoping that the area will become a new tourist attraction. Cho said, Besides the art village, I'd like to hold exhibitions with his works I have at Gyeongsangbuk-do Office or in Andong, close to Cheongsong. I hope more people can see and understand Nam's work and artistic spirit.Construction of Lee, O-deog Literature Hall in Hyeonseo-myeon.Commemoration for pioneering children's literature and advancement of the Korean language / Utilized as a Senior Citizens' Center to reduce operating costsGweon, Jeong-saeng (1937~2007) and Lee, O-deog(1925~2003) are heralded as the masters of children's literature in Korea.Lee, O-deog was born and lived in Deokgye-ri, Hyeonseo-myeon, Cheongsong-gun (13 Hyeonseo-myeon, Cheongsong-gun, Gupyeong-gil : currently the property of someone else). He learned early on about fairy tales from the church he attended. It was after he became a teacher when he went around rural areas teaching Korean to children. Although his work "Azalea" was published in the magazine A Boy's World in 1954, he spent most of his career as a writing teacher rather than as a writer of children's literature. He started his literary career after his fairy tale, "The Pheasant", won DongA Newspaper's Annual Spring Literary Contest. He was also a true teacher of Korean education due to his participation in partaking in the Proper Use of Our Language Movement to abolish the remnants of Japanese influence from Korean literature.Despite an age difference of twelve years, Lee, O-deog and Gweon, Jeong-saeng are known for being the co-authors of Ji-Eum (Sound of Wisdom). Gweon's grandparents were also from Cheongsong; therefore, the two writers knew each other for a long time. The two men also saved letters they wrote back and forth to each other which was published later as a book (Teacher, How Are You These Days?). Lee kept a journal from 1962 up until this death in 2003. It was comprised of 98 volumes and a part of them was published as a book. The O-deog Literature Hall is scheduled to open its doors in Cheongsong. The interesting thing about the museum is that there will be a center for senior citizens within its walls. That is because the elders of the town planned the facility in order to commemorate and inform people about Lee's work. Due to a lack of budget, they are planning to divide the cost burden by setting up the Senior Citizens' Center in the museum.According to Park, Hyo-il(74), the steering committee leader for the museum, "The townspeople are planning to also reconstruct Lee's old house as well as plant poplar trees, which appears in his books, around the neighborhood once the literature hall opens."
